The combined newsrooms of KNTV-NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 are looking for a smart, organized and enthusiastic newsroom leader to join our award-winning team as an Assignment Manager in the San Francisco Bay Area. Applicants should be difference makers who want to win weather, breaking news and enterprise storytelling for our English & Spanish broadcasts and digital platforms. The successful candidate must have a keen vision for planning, logistics, scheduling and a passion for identifying and telling enterprise stories through an investigative filter.
Manage daily news coverage and operation of the combined Assignment Desk of KNTV & KSTS.
Develop and implement strategies for effective, efficient and smooth integrated operation of all assignments for both Telemundo and NBC Bay Area – ensuring maximum production efficiency for both broadcast and all digital platforms.
Schedule, and manage, a team of assignment and planning editors to integrate all newsgathering and reporting operations across both English and Spanish language broadcasts.
Generate story ideas through beat calls, social media, wires, websites and contacts throughout the viewing area.
Oversee and organize morning “early start” editorial call to ensure seamless coverage as we transition from morning to dayside newscasts
Attend morning and afternoon editorial meetings and actively pitch story ideas and active live shot opportunities.
Manage logistics and tracking for all live crews and live gear.
Track story ideas, tips and reports via multiple online platforms, including twitter, facebook, reddit, tumblr, Instagram, snapchat and other emerging social networks.
Identify and post meaningful online news content and developing stories to multiple online platforms
Work with field crews to proactively respond to breaking news, and maximize content of daily news coverage.
Supervise and schedule assignment editors to ensure all strategic coverage goals and objectives are met.
Maintain contact with various police, business, and government agencies and gather meaningful information for newscasts. Monitor scanners, alerts, web tools and apps for breaking news.
Oversee all story checks, follow-ups and assignments are pursued, communicated and recorded in the desk log.
Coordinate and fulfill requests with all NBCUniversal partners.
Show discretion, maturity and composure – especially when under pressure.
Coach and mentor others with an eye toward advancement for all.
Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, overnights, and weekends.
8+ years related assignment desk experience
5 years management with a demonstrated ability to oversee people, communicate effectively and maturely, with an eye on solutions at all times.
Strong news judgment, ethics and knowledge of legal standards.
Ability to work in fast-paced environment with daily deadlines and changing priorities.
Willingness to take on tasks outside of the traditionally defined role of an Assignment Manager.
Familiarity with use of social media as news gathering tools.
