Responsibilities

Role Summary:

Universal Pictures has an exciting career opportunity for a Director position in our Business & Legal Affairs Film Music department in Universal City, California reporting to the Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs, Film Music. This position will oversee the day-to-day business and legal affairs concerning a wide array of media, music and entertainment issues across filmed entertainment properties. The filmed entertainment group includes Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment, 1440, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, DreamWorks Animation Television, and Blumhouse Pictures.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Negotiate, draft, review and analyze an extensive range of music and media agreements, including talent agreements, producer agreements, soundtrack distribution agreements, songwriter and co-publishing agreements.

  • Advise client groups (including marketing, home entertainment, franchise management, consumer products) regarding music rights and clearances for use of content on their platforms.

  • Provide general advice and support concerning music rights and music-related legal issues to the business.

  • Advise clients regarding union compliance, and performing rights concerns.

  • Maintain the integrity of our business practices and policies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7+ years of experience, with a minimum of 5 years in music-specific legal work, preferably in a music business affairs, rights & clearances, or licensing capacity with experience in label relations, publishing, union agreements, or a related field specific to the Music Industry preferred.

  • Member of the California State Bar or registered with the California bar as in-house counsel.

  • Prior experience managing and training staff is highly preferred.

  • A strong background in the area of copyright law (US and foreign) and intellectual property matters.

  • Excellent negotiating, drafting and analytical skills.

  • Thorough understanding of licensing agreements, including terms, and ability to identify issues during contract review.

  • High level of professional communication etiquette with ability to effectively interact with clients.

  • Self-reliant and highly organized, with the ability to pay high attention to detail.

  • Self-starter with the ability to handle high volume of licenses with accurate execution.

  • Ability to read, extract and input critical data.

  • Willingness to take ownership of projects and exercise responsibility, and open to new challenges.

  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to client concerns, questions and issues.Eligibility Requirements:
