JOB SUMMARY : The Software Engineer’s role is to define, develop, test, analyze, and maintain mobile software applications in support of the achievement of business requirements. This includes writing, coding, testing, analyzing and supporting software programs and applications along with configuration management of applications. The Software Engineer will also research, design, document, and modify software specifications throughout the production life cycle.

Collaboration across teams, departments, parks, and vendors will be central to the success of the Software Engineer.

This position is based in Orlando, Florida and may require travel to other Universal parks on occasion.


  • Design, develop, test, and maintain mobile applications

  • Assist in the definition, development, and documentation of software’s business requirements, objectives, deliverables, and specifications on a project-by-project basis in collaboration with internal users and departments

  • Liaise with other technical staff to assist in resolving problems with software products or company software systems

  • Document code, applications, and related systems with exceptional detail

  • Recommend new technologies to improve the delivery process

SCOPE: Follow established Universal Parks Technology methodologies and provide input to improve practices. Use established development and support tools to meet Service Level Agreements. Use established project management tools to report project statuses for IT dashboards and reports. Work directly with IT management and participate in regular meetings with user community.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree required in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related.


  • 6+ years of experience developing enterprise applications

  • 4+ years of experience developing native applications for Android

  • Published at least two original applications on Google Play

  • Proficient Java developer with solid understanding of current design patterns and best practices including material design, conserving battery life, and more

  • Expert using Android Studio, Eclipse and the Android SDK

  • Familiarity with various software development methodologies including Agile, Waterfall and TDD

  • Experience programmatically interacting with device hardware including GPS, NFC, camera, accelerometer, and/or microphone

  • Experience with RESTful APIs using XML, JSON, and other data formats

  • Experience with source control systems such as TFS, SVN or GitHub

  • Experience with e-commerce

  • Rapid adoption of new systems and languages

  • Ability to understand and maintain existing complex code bases

  • Ability to design and develop backend services to support mobile applications

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication


  • Experience with in-app purchasing is a plus

  • Experience with responsive mobile web design is a plus

  • Experience with Xamarin and/or PhoneGap tools are a plus

  • Experience in a continuous integration/automated build environment is a plus

  • Experience with other programming languages, particularly C# is a plus

  • Experience developing iOS and/or Windows Phone applications are a plus
